What In The Wide World Is A Groom’s Cake ?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
by Sue Toliver

Ready for the next thing to hit the wedding circuit? I’m sure that you have either heard of, or seen, a wedding cake. They are quite popular at almost every wedding ceremony. The next incarnation of the wedding tradition is something called the groom’s cake. So, just what is a groom’s cake? We are glad you asked because we aim to tell you. We will be exploring the world of the groom’s cake in this article.

Originally from the Southern United States, the groom’s cake was originally thought of as an added expense. It has been making a huge comeback. The whole idea originally was that this was to be a gift from the bride to the groom. Usually made from chocolate or soaked in liquor, it tends to have a much more “masculine” tone than a regular wedding cake. You won’t see any rosettes or flowers on this cake.

It is a very multi-functional and adaptable cake. For example it can be used as a desert at the rehearsal dinner while the regular wedding cake is used at the actual wedding. It usually sits right next to the bride’s cake, and is later cut into pieces and given to the wedding guests as a tasty treat that they can enjoy later.

How about a little “tradition”? Tradition states that a single woman should place a slice of this groom’s cake under her pillow on the same night in which she receives it. Know what will happen then? She will dream of her future husband. Not sure how many single women have actually done this.

Interested in wedding favors? Sliced pieces of the groom’s cake can also be wedding favors. Be sure to get creative with the packaging. Packaging will help to reflect the bridal style that you wish to convey to your guests.

Currently the “creative trend” in groom’s cakes is to have the cake reflect the groom’s particular interests and hobbies. You don’t have to do this…you should do it because you want to. Be sure to check though. You want the theme of the groom’s cake to be appropriate for the wedding you want to throw. If you are having an elegant wedding, a groom’s cake with “modern art” might not fit in very well.

So, now you know what a groom’s cake is. Would you be interested in getting a wedding cake topper for the top of it? We would be more than delighted to show you one or two. Follow us over to our blog on this subject for more information.

Want Some Cake Decorating Tips?

Friday, December 18th, 2009
by Sam Anderton

It is becoming more common for people to decorate cakes themselves, rather than paying out for an expensive professional to do it for them.

So how do you go about decorating a cake? Well the first thing you need to do is to work out the design you want to use. To do this you need to have some knowledge of the person the cake is for. If it is an adult, then what sort of things are they interested in?

Often if the cake is for a man, you will know of a particular sport he likes, or a hobby that he has which he really enjoys and then you can start to think about how you could make a cake from these ideas.

All you would need to do is to cover the cake in icing, color it a water color and then make a basic boat from either marzipan or icing which can be colored. You can buy a small figure to put in the boat, and give him a rod that you will be able to make out of many household objects.

Ladies love flowers, so if your cake is for a women, then this would be a good starting point. You could go as simple or as intricate as you wanted to.

Just ice a round cake and decorate with bought flower decorations for a simple to do cake, or you can make your own flowers with icing and then add these to the cake top and perhaps round the sides. You could leave enough space to write a message in an icing pen.

For a sports fan you could try and make your cake something to do with his favorite sport. A soccer cake, rugby cake, cake based around fishing or golf are all quite easy to think about ideas to make so they will look nice.

If you are decorating a cake for a child you can easily make a really simple cake by just using a swiss roll and decorating it to be a caterpillar, a snake, a train and probably lots of other things. Just a little imagination and some time and you will be surprised at what you can do with a swiss roll!

Just use your imagination and whatever skill level you are at, and you will be able to make a great cake.

Cake Decorating Tips For Birthday Cakes

Sunday, December 13th, 2009
by Sam Anderton

Lots of adults like to have a go at decorating cakes for their loved ones birthday, or special celebration, but sometimes are a bit short of cake decorating tips and ideas.

Really to come up with a cake decoration that will suit the person, you need to have a think about what they are interested in. This will give you a good starting point. You obviously have to match this with your skill level though, otherwise the cake design will not work and you will just get very frustrated.

Often if the cake is for a man, you will know of a particular sport he likes, or a hobby that he has which he really enjoys and then you can start to think about how you could make a cake from these ideas.

If the person the cake is for is a sports fan of any kind, then it will be quite easy to locate a design to suit. For example if he is a keen soccer player then you could decorate a rectangular cake, coloring the top the color of the pitch. Then make a small ball out of marzipan or icing and color it to suit. You will be able to buy some small figures to be the players, or if you are creative you could make some in his favorite team colors. If this all seems too daunting then just do the pitch with a couple of bought goals and mark all the other things in icing pens.

If the adult is keen on gardening, then decorating a rectangular cake as a lawn with flower borders, or a vegetable garden with little bunches of carrots (made with marzipan).

Just ice a round cake and decorate with bought flower decorations for a simple to do cake, or you can make your own flowers with icing and then add these to the cake top and perhaps round the sides. You could leave enough space to write a message in an icing pen.

What about a child’s favorite tv or comic character? These can be quite easy to do. You can even find cake molds in the shape of the more popular characters, then all you need to do is to ice it in the correct colors.

For a young girl, you can make a beautiful princess cake in the shape of a castle. Use a square cake as your base and then cut a swiss roll (or two) up to make the turrets. Cover the whole thing in icing and decorate with silver balls. Any young girl will love this idea.

For a little girl how about decorating her own castle. Just use a square cake as your base, add four turrets which can be cut from swiss roll, ice the whole thing and then decorate with lots of pretty things.

Hosting the perfect wedding shower..

That special day in a woman’s life may come sooner or later, but it’s eventually coming; if you’re the one dealing with putting the pieces of the puzzle altogether, you’re facing a real challenge unless you’re not organized enough to deal with it. However, with proper management and info, you should be able to figure everything out and throw the best party ever. Some things never change, but bridal showers aren’t between those, because apparently they’ve evolved from the “girls night” party style into some sort of a family and friends reunion attended by the closest people around the bride and groom. No matter what the approach to this party is, there are certain things you need to take care of when planning it.

Well, what do you want to do next? Do you want to go for a themed party or for a simple one? This is the first decision that you’re facing, and you should make it pretty quick, since invitations must be sent at least six weeks before the party. If you’ll go for a themed party(and you can choose a spa theme, pool party and so on), you’ll have to adapt everything to that: invitations, menu, costumes, and so on.

After making that decision, it’s time to start planning: think about a location and make the proper arrangements for it, but try to consult with at least other two friends of the bride to be. If you’ve got the location set up and the date settled, you can design the invitations and send them out - remember that they should already give the tone of the party - according to the theme; invitations come in various shapes and sizes, 3d elements were added to some lately, in a word you have plenty of models to choose from.

But soon there are more things to take care of, like decorations - and here you can include home made stuff, plus balloons, a banner with the bride and groom, candles, ribbons and many more; poems would be the perfect add-on to the whole picture and you can find many suited ones online. When planning the whole thing, take good care of the supplies (the food and cakes are the most important).

With these things spelled out, all you have to do now is to make some decisions and put them into practice; things may not come very easy, but this is just one night and for the bride, it should be memorable.

How to Decorate a Church for a Wedding

Friday, January 23rd, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Decorating a church for a wedding may not seem like such a difficult feat. However, there is some work involved. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you use up all of the decorations you have to only find that you need more. That can result in a disaster, especially if you can’t find anything that is the same color or the same thing that you’re out of.

You need to make sure that you can go to the church and assess the sanctuary before you even order your decorations. You need to know how many pews there are, how many windows, the width of the windows, details about the altar area, and so much more.

So when you are decorating a church for a Wedding, ask yourself these three questions: - What decorations can I use? This is an important question because some churches will not allow certain decorations. They have a rather traditional view of decorations. So make sure you consult with the church first. Tell them what you want to do and make sure that it is allowed. You don’t want to buy decorations and then find out that you can’t use what you have bought.

- Are the decorations necessary? Many churches are already very ornate, which means they may not need much in the way of decorations. So you have to evaluate how much you actually need based on the natural dcor of the sanctuary. This can save you a lot of money on the decorations.

- What decorations are suitable? Again, you have to evaluate the sanctuary so that you know what decorations are suitable. If you don’t want to have an extremely formal event, some flowers here and there are great. You don’t have to overdo it. Although many flowers are nice, church sanctuaries have a natural beauty to them. And the bride is the focus of the wedding anyway. People pay closer attention to her dress.

Some tips

There are simple tips that you can use to make the ceremony look great. You may even be able to borrow some decorations from the church, especially if past wedding parties have left some of their things behind. Sometimes churches will store those things that have been left behind in case they can be used again.

Churches may also have candelabras that you can use. Most churches already have them and they will not have a problem letting you borrow them. In the meantime, you can use flowers in the windows, on the altar, and use flowers at the end of the pews so that the aisle is lined with flowers. Sometimes the simplest of decorations can be the most beautiful. Also, having flowers at the ends of the pews go great with the petals that are sprinkled along the aisle by the flower girl.

And when it comes to your flower arrangements, it is better to opt for larger arrangements than a series of smaller arrangements.

Research

So make sure you do the proper research. If you don’t, then you may find that you have too many decorations or not enough. Consult with anyone in the church who can help you with this so that you know what is appropriate and what isn’t appropriate. You might be amazed at how much time, effort, and money you save by doing the proper assessment before the wedding. In the end, you’ll be able to have a beautiful wedding that is charming and a lot of fun for everyone. It is the most important day of your life, so it is important that it is perfect.

Starting a Catering Business - Important Pointers

Sunday, October 12th, 2008
by Gary Pearson

If you have a passion for food and enjoy being around large groups of people, a catering business may be the perfect vocation for you. While a catering business does involve an extensive amount of physical labor and endless hours over a hot stove, the rewards can far outweigh the challenges.

Although it’s not necessary to have a culinary degree, you must be familiar with food safety and handling procedures, food preparation techniques, and food presentation. As you may be aware, eating food begins with the eyes, therefore it is crucial for you to possess the ability to present your food in a pleasing-to-the-eye manner. Not only must your food look good, it must taste even better!

If you believe you have what it takes to run a successful catering business, start by conducting research via the Internet or visit your local library and check-out books on the subject. You’ll need to find out as many details as possible regarding licenses and certifications that are required in your area.

Once you’ve completed your research, you need to construct a business and marketing plan. This is not a difficult process even if you have no prior knowledge about creating such documents. Just do a web search for “business plan” and “marketing plan” and you’ll find plenty of samples and helpful material. The libraries and online resources are always easy to find and cheaper alternatives to hiring a consultant for extensive support. The Small Business Association (SBA) provides a large selection of classes and publications for new business owners. Visit www.sba.org for more information about their services.

Financial institutions and private venture capitalists/investors are more likely to approve your monetary loans when you provide detailed business and marketing plans. You will also have to invest a certain portion of your savings for your business, but always remember to limit your investment to the amount you can spare to lose, if the business fails.

It’ll be a joyous experience when you first establish your catering business, but it’s essential to keep in mind that you’ll be multitasking during the first few months. Besides food preparation and event catering, you’ll need quite a good knowledge about advertising and marketing to find new sales opportunities. Furthermore, there are the daily operations necessary for your business, such as telephone answering, follow-ups, price quotations, ordering supplies, accounts managements and more.

Catering businesses are profitable, but initially you will have to work hard to make your business stand on its own, and have it well established, before you can relax.

Owning a catering business requires a great deal of stamina. Not only will you be preparing the food, you will also be required to deliver it, set-up serving tables, serve the food, tear everything down, and clean all the equipment.

There’s more for you to tackle when you are running a catering business. Most often, caterers work 15 hours per day, 7 days a week. Outdoor events are more common than indoor events, so you’ll need lots of energy and gumption to be able to handle the summer-day catering events. Also, maintaining a friendly attitude with lots of vitality throughout all this is essential for a good catering business relationship.

When you do what you love, the work isn’t considered a burden and most caterers enjoy working the long hours. Although it can be a stressful business, if you take time to organize and plan you can create a catering business that is exceptionally rewarding and profitable.
