Men To The Rescue

by Dr. Vance Hardisty

In Richmond, California, something in a garage exploded and soon the adjoining house caught fire. Reportedly, since it was in a high crime area, the front porch was encircled with security bars. The doors couldn’t be opened without a key – even from the inside. Six people were trapped, because, in their terror, no one could find the key that unlocked the doors.

The kitchen was engulfed in flames when Sylvester Wiggins and his wife drove by. Wiggins screeched to a stop, ran to the house from which screams were echoing, and tried to kick in the door. It wouldn’t budge. There was a live, downed power line in the front yard, but Wiggins overlooked it and kicked again. Nothing gave. He backed up then … and ran full speed toward the door, slammed his shoulder into it…and it gave. He fell with the door into the house and six people were liberated from certain death.

Sylvester Wiggins didn’t hold the key the household members thought they needed to save them – but he held a key to their deliverance, never the less – his determination, his compassion, his bravery and his strength. Latest reports through news reports are that Wiggins is raising money for the displaced family.

Such a story brings tears to our eyes, because there isn’t anything much more gripping than the gallantry of a man and the power he has to save someone – or some thing. Similarly, every man wants to be the knight in shining armor to his wife. He wants to be her hero, the one she dreams about and turns to in an emergency. Bottom line, men are rescuers. It is one of their God given desires. And both men and women, who want to save their marriage, need to understand this, because this is at the heart of many of a man’s reactions that might be a bit puzzling or even irritating. Here’s what we mean.

Choking back tears, Ginny told her husband, Bill, that she had been through a terrible day at work. “It all was so unfair,” she said. “When I got upset, it got worse and everyone was glaring at me or fighting with each other.” “Who was involved in this?” Bill asked, suddenly tuning in to what she was saying. “Well, there was the supervisor, and Annie, and… “What bought all of this about?” Bill demanded, his inner rescue instincts at alert. “Why did you let it become a problem?” “Well…” she began. “What did you do that caused the whole thing to blow-up, Ginny?” he asked. “Things like this don’t just happen.”

Choking back tears, Ginny told her husband, Bill, that she had been through a terrible day at work. “It all was so unfair,” she said. “When I got upset, it got worse and everyone was staring at me or fighting with each other.” “Who was involved in this?” Bill asked, suddenly tuning in to what she was saying. “Well, there was the supervisor, and Annie, and… “What bought all of this about?” Bill needed his inner rescue instincts at alert. “Why did you let it become a problem?” “Well…” she began. “What did you do that caused the whole thing to blow-up, Ginny?” he asked. “Things like this don’t just happen.”

Bill stood there for a couple minutes, his mouth open, stunned at what had just happened. He had absolutely no idea what he’d done wrong. He had been listening very intently, trying to figure out what had caused the love of his life to be in such pain. He knew that if he could discover what had caused the problem, he could do something about it and fix it for her. He could rescue her. Yes, he might have inferred that it was her fault, but he didn’t mean it that way. He would have turned it around if she’d just given him the chance.

Jenny spent the next 20 minutes crying. Why couldn’t Bill ever just listen and try to understand? Men and women in marriages all around the world are asking the same questions. What a woman must understand, if she wants to keep her marriage, is that a man, at heart, is a rescuer. He wants to fix any problem that causes hurt to his sweetheart. It is as natural as breathing. To understand that and more about your man, dive into our women’s material. What a man has to understand, if he wants to save his marriage, is that a woman wants him to listen to her heart and then, yes, rescue her, but to do it in the right way.
